Saturday night was a packed night to see the latest duo-on-fire come out of Vancouver, Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer. It was a night of brotherly love, swaying hips with attitude, a ton of beer, beards, and new band members.
We are very excited for the next round of Unsigned Vancouver! Steam Whistle presents this awesome event a couples times a year to promote local music and drink lots of beer. It’s pretty much a combination of our favourite activities. On top of this, the event costs a mere $5 and the entire amount goes to Music BC Charitable Foundation. Unsigned has featured over 70 Canadian Indie bands in 4 cities, and have raised over $70,000 for local arts charities.
Since we’re all about the music, here’s a preview from each of the bands! Give them a quick listen, do a little dance, and get pumped for the show in less than a week!

Vancouver duo the Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer will be hitting the Biltmore this Saturday for their first show this year in Vancouver. Not only that… but Matt Rogers from HAM’s brother Ben Rogers will be opening up the show for them! In honour of brotherhood, today’s Song of the Day features 2 songs! One from each.
HAM’s live recording of “Wake Up” at The Shed for Bass Tracks Films is below, and live videos are always the best because they are a teaser of what’s to come! The duo just won a Sirius XM Indie Award for Blues Group of the year, a pretty great and well-deserved honour.
Ben Roger’s also has some live videos, including this lovely lullaby “Goodnight Forever.” This is definitely less attitude-y and more folk than his brother’s blues band, but the musical talent in the Rogers family is incredible! Enjoy the videos.

If I could give out awards for band websites, White Denim would definitely win gold. Check it out, and there’s even a free music song download up on there! Take a listen to our Song of the Day and take the download if you’re into the music.
White Denim opened up for Wilco a few months back in Vancouver, but tomorrow night they headline the Biltmore. The Texan guys have a really great sound, more original than most throw-back rock groups, and they must be tonnes of fun by the look of their music video. Hope to see you tomorrow at the Biltmore! Tickets available here.
Tonight Chicago metal trio Russian Circles hits the Biltmore as part of their never-ending tour that started in Europe in March, and will continue well into the fall, if not forever. I may or may not have mentioned my highschool metal faze on the blog before, but now you know. These guys are going to (post) rock the Biltmore, if you like anything on a scale from Mogwai to heavy I’d recommend you coming down to see the show!
THIS is the cutest music video I have probably ever seen. This is the kind of thing I watch with the kids I nanny (yes, I’ve been introducing them to Canadian indie music at a very young age) because it’s not scary, creepy, gross… unless moving dolls creep you out. It’s adorable, folksy, and a reminder of the beauty of the great north west. I present to you: New Earth, by Zerbin.
Come check them out with us this Thursday at the Biltmore Cabaret with Good for Grapes and Redbird, presented by 100.5 The Peak! It will be a great show for sure, see you there!
The VMR had a chance to catch up with Zerbin via email about their current tour: Cathedrals & Clubs. Here’s what they had to say:
Can you tell us about the Cathedrals & Clubs tour? Its a great idea and there’s so many beautiful churches strung across Canada, did you chose them or did you have any church communities specifically ask you to play there?
It’s something that’s sorta happened to us by default. We write all sorts of song and some of these have a definite spiritual thread in them. Often we see things like healings and other supernatural stuff happening while we’re playing. Sometimes this fits really well in a Cathedral setting but other times it fits even better in a Club. We’re just about attempting to make beautiful music that people can connect with on lots of different levels. I think one of the levels that is often neglected by pop music is the spiritual stuff. We’re not afraid to go there but just embrace it as it’s a big part of who we are. People often associate churches with this sort of thing but we think it can happen no matter where you’re at.
Where are you guys from? How has being a “Canadian Indie Band” influenced your music / has it?
Well we’re based in Edmonton right now but are gonna be moving to beautiful BC right away. In particular Victoria! Canada has for sure influenced our music as we are all very proud Canadians. Actually we’ve got a couple American’s in the group – haha. But we all love Canada. There’s something about the beauty of Canada that inspires us to attempt to capture something similar in our sound.
What’s your favourite part of BC on tour? Any special towns / areas / things you love especially about BC?
For me (Jason) my favourite part of BC is a stretch of highway in between Victoria and Nanaimo where there is this lake on the east side and my favourite mountain. We tour BC cause we love it and we’ll take any excuse to play music and walk around in big forests.
